20 years of FREEDOM? memories from the golden age...

This is the question, "To be or not to be... free!"

I was lucky, compared with my parents generation to have the chance of having more opportunities, to be able to dream further than the communist limits.

20 years ago we had revolts in Romania which was presented as a popular revolution. We said good bye to the communist regime in a unique way, being the only country in the Eastern Block where 1600 people died for that. The majority were innocent people, true heroes who died to achieve our generation's freedom!

Anyway... here are some random memories I have, from 20 years ago…

At school:
-we had to sing "Tricolorul", the National Anthem those days, every single morning. The teacher was checking our ears to see if everybody has the correct hygiene. If anyone was dirty, he/she was sent home and had to come back together with the parents and was humiliated in front of the hole class. Physical punishment was allowed.
-the classrooms’ walls and hall ways decorated with Communist Party elements, logos, quotes, Ceausescu & Elena pictures, etc…
-At the break-ends in the courtyard we had to make (each class) 2 columns boys-girls rows, like a little army and the teacher brought us inside.
- we (the boys) use to have fights between the Romanian Classes and Hungarian Classes, just because... we were different.
- I was advanced as "pioneer" in the first group - the elite!!! :)) and I was really proud that I had the right to use the pioneers uniform, not like the majority, the regular one. That felt good! :)
- we had mandatory visits to the puppet theater, to some mini propagandist movies with Ceausescu, where he was presented as the most beloved Romanian, a kind of God.
-I remember the old books having as the first page Ceausescu’s picture and a message from him, communist poems instead of real literature, many communist songs at the Music Classes. At the history classes we were told that we were the best, that our leaders were great heroes, that other mean people occupied our territory and steal our resources.
-we had to go on Saturday at school as well.

At home:
-we had 2 hours TV program in the evening, mostly news and sometimes a selected movie. I remember the show “Asa Da! Asa Nu!” – “This way Yes! This way No!” where were presented some study cases and at the end was the conclusion: this way –Yes! Or This way - No! On Sunday morning we had a program for children: 5 to 10 minutes cartoons and sometimes also several minutes a part of movie for kids (a full episode could be viewed in a month). And I almost forgot… my favorite, “Teleenciclopedia” show, a kind a show like Discovery Channel where you could find fascinating things from different domains!
-we had ratio for food, which meant that every family was entitled to receive (buy) bread, butter, milk, etc. according to the number of persons. For example for the bread we had tickets and sometime, if we kindly ask the seller, we could receive today also the portion for tomorrow, in advance. Sometimes we had to be at the cue at 6AM to be sure that we will receive the product, if there were 2 wanted things we (my mum & I) had to split because it could last 2-3 hours. I remember the big box for milk at the entrance of the block where everybody who had the monthly milk ticket should receive it fresh every morning. Every family had the milk box under the locker.
-I remember the fridge, with very few products, always the same. Most of the time we had products from the countryside, from our relatives living in the villages, majority being small farmers. It worked like that: we helped them at farming and they gave us part of the harvest or meat. A nice thing was the family reunions, mostly when we had to split the products…
-“Nu te supara frate” game… the most popular board game

Outside, in the city:
-the public transport, you needed to buy the ticket from offices and mark it yourself in the bus. There were some buses adapted to consume natural gas instead of diesel, and the buses had to refuel at end of line. They looked weird with 2 or 4 big gas cylinders on top.
-on the national day we had to go in the city center with a mini flag and each block of flats had to have a big national flag
-when you went to the doctor, you needed to give him a present, Kent cigarettes or some foreign coffee was OK, but everyone gave whatever they had…
-“Fructo” & “Bem Bem” soft drinks, “Fortuna” beer
-there was a general fear about the Police and Secret Police “Securitate”
-there was the general idea that you don’t need to worry about anything, you don’t have to think too much, there are people in the Communist Party who will take care of everything. The only thing you were recommended to think about was how to make your job better, a kind of excellence but in a ridiculous way. This is one of the propagandist messages: “We are working, we are not thinking!”

And many others…

Targu-Mures, my home town in Transylvania, Romania

Targu-Mures is located in the middle of Transylvania, "the country after you cross the forest" or Ardeal, "the country with hills", the area surrounded by a circle of forested mountains in Romania.

The movie was filmed by Doru, my cousin who lives now in Chicago.
Enjoy 3 minutes driving! :)

Basescu & Geoana after the debate - Elections 2009

The final debate, the last step to Cotroceni Palace for this 2 guys!

I will not insist about the topics and Q&As, but let's have a look on the final picture which might tell us the winner:

(Gandul newspaper, http://www.gandul.info/poze/politica/ultima-zi-de-campanie-de-la-senzationala-provocare-a-lui-basescu-sa-ne-confruntam-la-otv-la-avertismentele-lui-geoana-pd-l-pregateste-miscari-de-strada-5155141?type=main_picture&ptr=0)

Let's analyze the Body Language signs! It is known that every detail counts and the last picture after the debate tells us who is the moral winner. The candidates also know this, so they will try to use every little trick to appear as the dominant one!

The body size:
60%-40% for Mr Geoana's side (useless comments here, he is simply bigger. Also note that he is a little bit twisted, so in the picture appears about 95% of his body, while Basescu has his body present in his maximum size)

The vertical axe:
51%-49% for Mr Basescu.

The smile:
I would say 60%-40% for Mr Basescu who has a natural smile, while Mr Geoana's is a little bit exaggerated, he doesn't smile very often and it's not looking natural for him.

The handshake:
Mr Geoana was placed in the left side, normally who is staying in the left has an advantage because at the handshake moment he has his palm over the other one - a very strong indicator for dominance and power! But, let's have a close look! :)

75%-25% for Mr Basescu, both hands are so clear on Mr Geoana's territory, twisting his arm and making it look unnatural together with the smile. His arm is also covering a piece of Geoana's body! Mr Basescu has 55%-45% just for the palms area because he is using his fingers to cover the palms and his thumb is on top!

So, the picture tells us that Mr Basescu was the winner of the debate! We will see tomorrow if he will remain President for the next 5 years!

Romanian Mass Media... disgusting!

I watch carefully the elections for President in Romania 2009.

Normally the media should be fair, but in Romania several media tycoons united to sabotage actual President, reformer Traian Basescu. I could see that every day on several the Romanian private news TV stations and newspapers, all the news are presented to suggest that the actual President is bad and evil and Mr Geoana is positive, good and he will save us from the crisis. The media tycoons Sorin-Ovidiu Vantu, Dan Voiculescu and Dinu Patriciu are Romanian entrepreneurs, ex-members of "Securitate", all with charges for corruption, they were getting rich under PSD governments and they are ready to do anything to get away with their charges.

When 80% from the media tries to brainwash a whole country... that's something unbelievable!

And now, even the Romanian National Television TVR, which is managed from public fonds by Mr Alexandru Sassu, a PSD member (ex communists) is playing so visible for Mr Geoana (he is mentioned for all his actions in a posivive way, he is presented near the head of the Romanian Orthodox Church, at football matches where the Romanian Team is winning the journalists are forced to mention him, there are TV shows interrupted to show his meetings...) and Mr Basescu, the reformer, is ignored when he has positives actions and is very present with negative stories, mostly personal things.

An example of manipulation was in organizing the first debate for elections when TVR broke the agreement with the parties and changed the format of the show, inviting 2 very vocal competitors who would play 100% against the actual president.

Another one is presenting a fake video when the president is shown hitting a 10 year kid. For 2 days they showed that movies and now, when it was proven by so many people that it's an ordinary fake tape, nobody admits that on TV. They are doing that hoping that the people will not find in time about it...

Another example is presenting the events at Timisoara on 1st of December, different than reality. There were 2 people fighting and one officer used a spray can to separate them and on the news it was: "Violences at Timisoara! A very aggressive group of 200 people from PDL (Traian Basescu's side) broke the meeting and police was forced to use gases to calm them down!"
And it wasn't a PDL group according to the witnesses, they were mostly the people gathered in city center for the National Day and being revolted because Mr Geoana is using this special day for his elections campaign. Timisoara is the simbol of our freedom, in that city the revolts again the communists started in 1989!

I remembered how in december 1989 we listen "Europa Libera" radio to find out what is really happening in the country, since all the media was monopolized. Now it's something similar, we read the few media channels which are not corrupted by the media tycoons like www.hotnews.ro

These being the facts, I have left no choice than sustain again the imperfect president we still have, which is by the way backed up by PPE.

If he will not be re-elected... I'm afraid I can't see a reason why I should return for good in my country. I prefer to stay in a normal one...
